This demo was made available for download on PSN & Steam alil over 3 months after Last Recode launched! Despite starting at the Vol.1-looking title screen instead of the collection menu, it does have all the various options the full game has including eng/jp voice acting select! Although for some reason the background image sticks to only 1st Form Haseo instead of shuffling between 1st & 2nd as it would in the full game.
I have to say that this demo is uh..... really lacking. No, wait! I'm not rehashing my original Vol.1: Rebirth demo review! In comparison to that one, this is much more representative of the full game! Because you see, its the entire opening of Vol.1. The intro, tutorial stuff with IYOTEN & Asta, loads of cutscenes finally ending with Haseo being Data Drained by Tri-Edge. The main problem with that is its about 10 minutes of playing the game and something like an hour of watching cutscenes.
JRPG demos have come a loooooong way since the .hack//Infection and G.U. Vol.1 demos of old. Shoutouts to the Lunar Silver Star Harmony and Project X Zone 1 & 2 demos having unlockable goodies earnable from their demos to send to the full game. Bigger shoutouts to the Monster Hunter Stories, Phantasy Star Portable, and Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology demos (among others) for letting you continue playing after the main part of the demo is finished! AND letting you carry over save data to continue in the full game where you left off in the demo!
Come to think of it, the .hack//Link demo allowed saving, playing around in Areas, and using your save to continue from that point! Why the regression?? In a game series where its preferable to "convert data" from the previous game before starting up the next one we're instead back to no saving data to be carried over and getting kicked back to the title screen once its over!
Even aside from all of that it coulda been better in other ways. Giving people a taste of the Desktop would've been nice. Letting 'em see the "other side" of the game and all that. Have a couple things available to read in the News and Forums section! Reading the "Choices" e-mail from Ovan would've been a great way to end it. Will you run away from "The World" or return to it (in the full game!)? Heck they could have made "The World" icon say something like "purchase the full game in order to log back in!" when trying to launch it! I also feel the demo should've started at the collections menu screen to show people they'd be buying into 4 game + extras.
Gotta say this was yet another poor demo! Only slightly better than the original G.U. demo since like I said, this time around its representative of the full game! Oh and by the way why in the heck is the filesize 1/10th of what the size of the entire collection takes?!
